2:00 pm
press conference if you will. last time it was to announce that chris christie was supporting him for the presidency. what could it be tonight? fox business is all over this with the brightest financial minds on the planet. you should invest in it, you should watch it tonight. fox business. hello, everyone. i'm dana perino. it's 5:00 in new york city and this is "the five." >> super tuesday has arrived. in a few hours we may have a much clearer picture of how this presidential election will shape out. candidates are vying for a bonanza today. 865 on the democrats side. 595 for republicans. we begin the gop race. 11 states are in play. the first polls close in two hours from now in georgia, vermont and virginia. we kick off our super tuesday coverage with the one and only
2:01 pm
campaign, carl, in a tough assignment of palm beach, florida. we were saying that this day, super tuesday, is like your birthday and christmas all rolled into one. like your favorite exempt for election day. >> it is the most consequential part of the primary process. the nominating day has been decided more often than not in the republican party on super tuesday. if history holds and the polls are right, donald trump is good evening. we're at his resort and golf club where he'll be having a press conference tonight. but not a normal rally. we won't see the screaming crowds and the jumbo screens. this will be a much more quiet affair with the press conference around 9:00ish. he is here in florida to make it clear he wants to win here. beating marco rubio, the florida senator. just as he has said he wants to win in ohio. those two states are winner take
2:02 pm
all two weeks from tonight. and tonight it is almost half the delegates to clinch the nomination. you can't get any bigger than this on the entire calendar. >> we'll take it around the table here. we'll save gutfeld for last. >> hey, super exciting. super tuesday. this press conference, it is important to note that it is a press conference. not just a campaign event. he announced it yesterday. i know a lot of people are speculating what he will say. let's hear from you. are you hearing anything? will it depend on the results tonight? >> yeah. he will address the night's results. and the trump campaign is expecting that the results will be very much tilted in mr. trump's favor. they concede that ted cruz could and in some of their views win texas. it is his home state. beyond that, trump is looking to pull up ws in about every other state. here in florida, the point he is
2:03 pm
trying to make is the next two candidates. if cruz gets a bunch of second places, that could keep him in the delegate hunt. one of the two out of cruz and rubio are likely to take a hit tonight. >> quite a day for the republican party, the speaker of house paul ryan going at donald trump. and it is not just paul ryan. you see people across the board now seemingly in alarm at the idea that donald trump will be the republican standard bearer. what are you hearing from the trump camp on this front? >> they're concentrating on winning primaries. realistically when you have the senate majority leader and the speaker of the house both decrying the rhetoric, it is also a big illustration of the concern in washington. whether the senate or the house, they might have their brands tarnished by some of rhetoric of trump's brands. >> it's interesting.
2:04 pm
i was shocked when i saw it. to pick up on your point that john cornyn was saying, the senate candidate might run ads against trump. >> how about ben saying he wouldn't even vote for trump. >> at some point -- >> saying about the abcs. anyone but clinton. >> well, eric, and jeff sessions, the senator from alabama who endorsed donald trump on sunday in huntsville was quick to say that donald should clear the air and speak clearly on this issue and get it behind him. when it come to white supremacy, it is not good to straddle anything. >> i think that he thinked he has disavowed and is trying to focus on getting primary states. perhaps it is still necessary. what do you think about the other two camps? even cruz called for a consolidation against donald
2:05 pm
trump. are they worried about the momentum igingiven that they hat been getting very much press? >> rubio definitely took the spotlight from cruz and trump over the course of the weekend some real hey makers. cruz was calling for consolidations. after the nevada caucuses saying we have to do something now. trump has serious momentum. in homes of trying to stop him. the other thing is the the way in which one can qualify to get proportionally allocated is kind of a high hurdle. it may not be a 1-2-3. it may just be getting all the delegates. if the winner's margin were not as big as it could be given the polls we've been seeing.
2:06 pm
>> the moment we've all been waiting for. >> you build it all up. >> let's assume donald trump has a great night. then there are the hurdles. how is he going to deal with the hispanic vote and speak to that group, to their aspirations, not about fearful do you think it is time for trump to have a come to jesus moment? >> that's a good one. >> i'm too tired. we've been doing all nighters. >> the news conference will serve that purpose. he will be asked these questions. one of the things trump is known for. you have spit balls? he'll smack them back. he will be asked about whether or not his belated disavowel was
2:07 pm
a mistake. that will get posed as will other questions. if he come out and gives a statement to the press, hey, i just won the nomination for all intents and purposes, the numbers will have indicated that he had an astronomically good night. >> there seem to be a theme saying the vote for front is a vote for hillary. are you hearing that out there? are we hearing it from rubio and cruz? anybody who is anti-trump? >> well, sure. the republican who's are not donald trump in this race, with the exception of ben carson who will do just about anything to bring trump down. ben carson has call for all the candidates to have a private meeting to talk about not ensubtling one another. before the debate in detroit tomorrow night. so most of the candidates haven't responded to it. some were not aware that the invitation had been made. of course it matters. >> can i, that was going to be
2:08 pm
my question that carson. you're so efficient you answered it already. have you heard anything coming out of there? the polls were mixed. cruz looked like ted home state advantage. could he pull off an upset there against trump? >> you know this. one of the rules of politics in presidential politics, get the governor. the governors tends to have the best and most complete this in any state. greg abbott and ted cruz have just had elections. so they're very strong and very confident. in fact, trump's campaign has acknowledged that it is not whether or not cruz will win but whether he can win by a margin that will put more blood back in his vanls. the trump campaign thinks cruz is toast. they think they'll beat him by such a large margin of numbers. >> again, i've been doing these numbers.
2:09 pm
for a long time i've said, if someone were to want help out as a real serious threat, they would have had to do it before super tuesday. one or the other, cruz or rubio, would have had to drop out. if ted cruz wins texas and by a large margin. he may even have more votes than donald trump until the rest states declare the winners. if he doesn't win a single state. whoever it is would have to have some massive unheard of comeback in the most likely one that could possibly do it. >> where donald trump is expected to win or has an advantage tonight, ted cruz is likely to come in second. and across the board rubio will come in third.
2:10 pm
he's made a real strong effort. there's a more wealthy, sometime more educated voters that he has been targeting across the country on super tuesday. that's where he thinks his big bank of votes will be, in virginia. that's the only state that rubio has been particularly only miss particular about. >> two more questions. >> i always think of the south as the home region for the republican party. and tonight, the idea that donald trump would dominate and that the evangelical vote wouldn't go to cruz, instead the vote would go to trump. i'm in amazement. really. i'm wondering, what are you thinking? what are you hearing from insiders? >> well, two ways to put this. you can go all the way back to 1998 when the republicans lost the house majority that they had for the first time in 60 years. and that they've been focused pretty. ever since on getting and
2:11 pm
keeping the house majority which is to say in the last eight years, the tea party, the evangelicals reemerging. and the anger that the party has embraced. they were not late when it came to recognizing the tea party wave in 2009 and 2010. orrin hatch was another one of the senators who realized, it is time for to us get tea party. that anger now has a new team captain. and donald trump, he is hitting home runs. >> the last question of mine. a good friend, kimberly guilfoyle. >> aah! what do you think, any surprises we can expect tonight? i'm trying to see if there is any way if there is a path for rubio or cruz, given the sheer
2:12 pm
mass and momentum we're likely to see. >> we sound like real doom and gloom for those guys. the truth is all of the campaigns that aren't trump and his campaigns, some of these candidates have. the campaigns have said, come what may we'll go all the way to the convention. sometimes its been whispered. sometime its been quotable. that's beginning to be what the republican establishment thinks will be how to stop it. >> all right. thanks. we appreciate it so much. there's much more to come this super tuesday. next, greg has an interesting twist. you won't want to miss this.

today is a big day. what america and the world has been waiting for. that's right. justin bieber's birthday. >> i really never thought i would get to this level. i never expected any of this. i definitely feel blessed. i just take it day by day. i try not to take myself too seriously. and i just have fun. >> it's crazy that i have so many fans that appreciate me that much. it really gives me, i wish that i could love someone that much. >> just think that there's so much power in being young and stuff like that. >> hola. >> truly a treasure. he turns 22 today. just think, in 13 years, he can
2:18 pm
run for president. i know, i know, he's from canada. that's not stopping ted cruz. am i right, donald? but it's super tuesday with trump way ahead. i'm thinking, let's just cancel this. just anyone him now. maybe saying that will keep him from suing me. >> we're going to open up the libel laws. when they write falsely, we can sue the media and get this story corrected and get damages. >> i would absolutely work to open up the libel laws. if you write something that's wrong, a will person like me and others can have a lawsuit and get damages. the press is amazingly dishonest. the press is a real problem in this country. >> go after the real enemy. the press. doesn't he realize, that's my stick? last night they said they should
2:19 pm
go. get lost. do they know they might be ushering in a second boss, one think thats he can reward you with a pat on the head on twitter? like a baseball team owner who also wants to coach but who also attracts fans. like david duke. and now louis farrakhan who gave trump odd praise. maybe this is not trump's fault but he is truly a unifier getting white and black racist leaders to agree on one thing. him. not to mention the democrats. a new poll shows both bernie and hillary beating trump in the general. are republicans about to elect a loser? least we can say it sell great. then in 2032 we can nominate justin beeber and start all over again. >> we were talking about this in the break. we were thinking about this. trump will be president and he'll be calling you. >> i'm back to doing magazines. >> you like getting fired.
2:20 pm
>> i do. i fire up. >> eric said to me, you can't change the first amendment. >> you can but you have to amen the constitution. >> but his idea is that if you write something wrong -- >> they're suing rolling stone over the false story. that already happens. >> the law is there. truth is a defense. if somebody writes something and it is true, you won't be able to prevail and get damages. the law exists if people write things that defame you or slander you. >> even if they're wrong, an sent malice aforethought is the language, you're still not guilty. if you're a public person, you really, it's hard to go forward with a libel suit. >> that's the constitutional cases in effect protect the first amendment. >> i think donald wants to lower
2:21 pm
the bar and start going after people. >> i think it might have been more rhetorical. one of the best things that republicans can do is go after the press. and don't forget, the press has a lower approval rating than even congress at hike 10%. hopefully it is a little more rhetorical. >> we talk about it on a weekly basis. >> by the way -- we have to point out. we often mock president obama for whining about fox news. so spnl what trump is doing? should not we be mocking him for doing the same thing? i know. it is hypocritical if we don't. >> don't look at me. i would say the same thing. >> do you think, eric, the democrats are right to think that trump's incendiary remarks help him? >> he said this himself. i haven't even begun on hillary yet. and don't forget, there are
2:22 pm
other candidates who are pulling very well against donald trump. early until they started going after trump. then he would fire back and go do his thing. then they would go down and he would go up. he's focused on one side. this is going to give her a few weeks of going right at him and expose in the general election. he has to focus on ted cruz and marco rubio. i think it is down to, he may after tonight start turning it on hillary. people might have thought rubio would be the vice presidential pick. that isn't going to happen. >> chris christie. >> yeah. but twaum derogatory personal attacks. >> i think it was worse than personal attacks. chris christie said a vote for trump is a vote for hillary clinton. i think that's worse.
2:23 pm
>> not a personal attack on his personal being. they definitely went down. >> or ted cruz calling him a conartist. it would be a very easy political ad to play against trump. >> but see, trump could look at marco rubio and see rubio making the personal attacks and say there by the grace of god go i. the disabled guy. making fun of a pow. suffering. he could look at marco and say i like the cut of his jib. he should be vp. he is just as tacky as i am. [ laughter ] >> a good theory. there is a school of thought of late that marco rubio shouldn't have gone negative and gone to personal insults. but personal insults was what enter teenage everybody for months. maybe it doesn't that wear well. i guess i've been anesthetized
2:24 pm
to it. i could never run. i could never say those things about someone else and i wouldn't want to be the target of that. i don't think it is necessary. in this race, they didn't start the fire. >> to quote billy joel. >> cnn this pulled trump's numbers up. cruz is down 4%. >> maybe cruz should start it. >> let's see. >> next, on the eve of today's vote, america's attorney general spoke to fox news about hillary clinton's e-mail investigation. what she revealed ahead.
2:25 pm
2:26 pm
2:27 pm
2:28 pm
one day a rider made a decision. the decision to ride on and save money. he decided to save money by switching his motorcycle insurance to geico. there's no shame in saving money. ride on, ride proud. geico motorcycle, great rates for great rides. she can't lock up the nomination tonight but hillary clinton is on target to pull far away from her rival bernie sanders whose campaign could be on life support after today.
2:29 pm
even if she wins the nomination, there is a giant obstacle to her candidacy. the fbi's criminal investigation into her use of a private server while secretary of state. the final batch of her e-mails were released on the eve of the vote yesterday. and our attorney general spoke to fox news for the first time about the probe. >> has a grand jury been convened regarding hillary clinton's handling of e-mail? >> we don't comment on specifyings. this being handled like any other review that we do. >> why hampton secretary clinton been interviewed yet? >> we don't comment on anything. >> shouldn't voters know hillary clinton's legal status as they get prepared to go to the polls? >> what they should know, and i hope they could know, any case the department of justice looks at will be handled, efficiently, fairly, thoroughly without any kind of artificial deadline on it. >> so they sat down in advance and said there would be a lot of questioning about it.
2:30 pm
about whether or not this would be hand appropriately. not with political consideration, ideology in mind. >> a couple things. when i saw the interview, i thought what a difference, what a different person and different personality she is from eric holder, the former attorney general. he was so caustic and wanted to fight all the time and i think she is a public servant trying to do the right thing. one of the things i thought was interesting, that the white house is not being consulted. i think that's important. i hope that's true. i think that's in the best interests for president obama. best for americans and in the best interests for him. if there is a decision on behalf of the fbi or the justice department that the white house not have any sort of finger print or thumb on the scale, or a heads up that they could interfere in any way. >> we have on it time. let's take a listen. >> are officials briefing josh earnest? >> i can tell you unequivocally
2:31 pm
that no one outside of doj has been briefed on this or any other case. that's not our policy and it has not happened in this matter. where do you think he got that information? >> i can't speak for josh. >> anyone else in the white house been briefed? >> no one in the white house has been briefed on this or any other case. >> now on the record, making those statements. loretta lynch is. let's see if this jives with what happens going forward. >> i think she is wonderful. i like her. i just don't believe the white house is not being at least brought up to speed on what's going on with hillary clinton, the investigation into whether hillary clinton broke the law by having to private e-mail server. it may not be on the record or in an e-mail. but josh earnest found out about it somehow. and i'm guessing if josh earnest found out about it, at some point one of the other senior advisers probably found it. and the president is probably
2:32 pm
kept in the loop. i'm guessing. >> they just picked up "the new york times." reporting i think in august that she is not the target of any criminal investigation. and then what josh earnest repeated, i think is essentially that same report. >> he's not being briefed. >> by the justice department. >> and you believe that. >> i do. >> and i remember when that report happen. i remember thinking josh earnest is repeating what he's seen in the new york times. >> do you buy it? >> who is worse? hill or bill? her actions exposed the country. his actions exposed -- never mind. unlike bill, she doesn't want a probe. and the great thing is if she wins the presidency, she could do a first interview on msnbc on lockup. and orange is her color, i might add. >> why did you destroy that?
2:33 pm
then i end up on the tape with you. this gets pick up. >> we'll have a lock on her cell door. >> never a dull moment, right? keep the faith. ungs what's coming up next, right?" special report. will the gop rally around donald trump? at 9:00 p.m. eastern, head over to fox news.com for the best election analysis anywhere on the web. of all time. super tuesday digital special. you won't want to miss it.

when they thought they should westart saving for retirement.le then we asked some older people when they actually did start saving. this gap between when we should start saving and when we actually do is one of the reasons why too many of us aren't prepared for retirement. just start as early as you can. it's going to pay off in the future. if we all start saving a little more today, we'll all be better prepared tomorrow. prudential. bring your challenges. welcome back to "the five." a lot of people tonight is the last dance for republican candidates who are not donald

trump. but newt gingrich thinks the end is in two weeks from now. >> i have a sense that trump's opponents are all gathering at the alamo and hoping for last stand. cruz will have a good day tomorrow. rubio could or could not. he might pull off a real surprise in minnesota in the caucuses. but trump will dominate tomorrow. then the big test will be on the 15th. if neither kasich nor rubio can carry their home state, then it is pretty much over. >> people have been asking ted cruz if he'll step down if he doesn't win texas and they're asking marco rubio to step aside if he doesn't win florida. >> i think it is a hard thing to ask a candidate that the night before super tuesday. especially for ted cruz. a lot of people wrote him off saying he could 97 make a may for it. and he ended up with one of the best ground games in the campaign and he's come this far. it is hard to ask somebody.
2:39 pm
it is like asking peyton manning, are you going to retire tomorrow night if you lose? let me play the game and then i'll make the decision. i think it is too early. >> too early, juan? >> i think today was supposed to be ted cruz' day. he had advertised his power with the south and the evangelical vote and with texas, this would be ted cruz tuesday. and it doesn't look that way at the moment. if you look at the polls, it looks like donald trump's day. tomorrow morning, in deference to the kind of psychological results. is there still a chance or does he see that he can make demands of donald trump and the party? >> let's game this out a little bit. if marco rubio doesn't do well in texas. doesn't hit the 20% threshold. he doesn't get any of the delegates. it goes to cruz and trump.
2:40 pm
and almost 2 million votes in texas. cruz can win another state. have more votes than donald trump. does he make the case that he is the one to take on donald trump in. >> he would say let's consolidate and get behind the candidate who is the alternative. he will have to use his best efforts behind rubio to persuade kasich, carson that they should all rally behind them. hey, let's be realistic. look at the numbers. i'm the best one to go forward. >> today, he said he wouldn't be able to vote for donald trump if he were the nominee. i would vote for whoever the nominee is against clinton. abc, anyone but clinton. what about the establishment saying i can't vote for donald trump? >> if you feel as a
2:41 pm
conservative, it is violating your principles. it is about about then. it is about now. the whole process of primaries was to help you figure out who you like and don't like. what worries me is when people demand or get behind somebody when you don't have to yet. i think we were seeing about trump being number one. i think it is hard to unify behind something that is unknown. i know more about black holes than do i about donald trump's ever changing news. i don't blame conservatives going, hey, this is something that i believe in. but that could change. >> we know -- >> the devil you know. >> 80% of the table would say, i think just about anything besides the devil we know. >> except i'm not sure if
2:42 pm
hillary will be for tariffs? i don't know. we're still in primaries. do you know what i mean? >> if marco rubio doesn't do well, trump said he needs to get out. steve asked earlier if the establishment would want rubio to go. here was the answer. >> maybe the establishment has to get out too, steve. when you look at what's going on, they've lost two big elections in a row. the last one with mitt romney should have been won easily. you're going against a failed president. mitt romney should have won that election and he didn't. >> your thoughts? >> well, you know, to me, what's going on here is a little bit like the wig party that disappeared. the republican party is in a civil war right now. no getting away from it. you say you're a democrat.
2:43 pm
are you enjoying it? >> no. it ill facts whole country. the way we feel about each other. our bail to speak as one. in this case, i think there are lots of republicans who are worried about, does donald trump really represent conservatism? if you think about conservative ideas, conservative principles, the fact that he goes back at george w. over weapons of mass destruction or gets into fights with the pope, and there's no outreach in terms of growth of the party. i think lots of people fear for the future of the party. >> then again, that cnn poll you just cited has donald trump approaching 50% of the gop vote. >> so he's continued to gain followers and momentum. which is something people need to realistically look at. here we are, super tuesday. they have to do some searching. then you have to bring into play
2:44 pm
the rnc which is very important and pivotal in material of going forward with a general election to marshal resources and the strategies and data bases to get out the vote. you need a partnership and a meeting of the minds. hike up carson saying, perhaps these candidates should come together to think about the general well being. especially with all this vitriol. are you in fact weakening one another, whoever the nominee will be by having these personal attacks. >> but the vitriol tactics started with donald. >> i'm not saying anyone in march. my point is he have one thds about it. >> i think that was an earth shattering interview em. he said he was for someone else to mound a conservative third person in the race to try to compete if it is donald trump. in fact, donald trump. here's my question. the gop.
2:45 pm
is it bifurcated? is it broken forever or is it fixed? >> i don't know. i know that we only have ten seconds. producers indulge me. you can't urge disruption of a party and then not expect some disruption. okay? so you're asking, what they've been asking for is the wholesale destruction of the republican party. and now they want the people they hate so much to swallow the medicine and cast the vote. and i think it is unreasonable without saying, hold on. is this big tent big enough for all of us. i think the ben speaks for a lot of people. don't forget, before there would be a never trump hash tag, there would have been a never jeb hash tag. so he is so much in the lead he doesn't need to keep hating on the people who are the
2:46 pm
establishment who he hates so much. why not try to bring them along and say i believe this party is big enough for all of us. i want to hear from you. i want to make a deal or whatever it may be. i think disruption begets disruption. we have to be prepared for that and not just expect he have one will fall into line.
2:47 pm
i'm billy, and i quit smoking with chantix. i had a lot of doubts going in. i was a smoker. hands down, it was, that's who i was. after one week of chantix, i knew i could quit. along with support, chantix (varenicline) is proven to help people quit smoking. chantix definitely helped reduce my urge to smoke. some people had changes in behavior, thinking or mood, hostility, agitation, depressed mood and suicidal thoughts or actions while taking or after stopping chantix. some had seizures while taking chantix. if you have any of these, stop chantix and call your doctor right away. tell your doctor about any history of mental health problems, which could get worse or of seizures. don't take chantix if you've had a serious allergic or skin reaction to it. if you have these, stop chantix and call your doctor right away as some can be life-threatening. tell your doctor if you have heart or blood vessel problems, or develop new or worse symptoms. get medical help right away if you have symptoms of a heart attack or stroke. decrease alcohol use while taking chantix.
2:48 pm
use caution when driving or operating machinery. most common side-affect is nausea. life as a non-smoker is a whole lot of fun. ask your doctor if chantix is right for you.

2:50 pm
a few hours from now this crazy and unpredictable election season will become much clearer with results. some final thoughts now ahead of this big evening. you were talking about this. there was even a conference call among republican governors trying to figure out the effects of donald trump. what do you think? >> i think the establishment class is finally realizing, it
2:51 pm
took until now to realize this donald trump thing went from the summer of trump to the fall of trump. too little too late. i think the prediction being, you're on the precipice of a trump basically his path being paved. 85% he is the nominee. at 8:51, i put it that he is the nominee. >> you know, you were just speaking with some emotion. some of our colleagues didn't grant you respect but i will. for you, if today is the day for trump, what do you feel? >> one of those people who say, i can do the math. basic math. that's what this is. so what i'm looking for tonight when we do special election coverage, are there any surprises?
2:52 pm
i'm looking at dana, he said 98% likely she wins the general election. he said that her strategy is not going to be -- it will be not so much hope and change as hate and castrate. so buckle up. >> what do you think of that? >> that was uncomfortable. okay. i'm looking forward to the coverage tonight. i want to see what happens. i'm optimistic about the future and great minds with ideas can come together. >> i will stay up and watch. definitely. for me, it is not about being proven right. it is about being right. like polls don't interest me. if donald trump gets the nomination, we will have four years to examine how many people on the right abandon their principles for personality and why did they do that? >> tough question. >> one more thing. up next.
